Presenting similarly to auditory processing disorders, HHL is different in that it is not an issue with the way the brain processes sound but is instead <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30617057\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">caused by a defect in the cochlea<\/a>, the part of the inner ear responsible for transmitting sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cochlea contains inner hair cells, outer hair cells and spiral ganglion neurons, which transmit acoustic information to the central auditory system. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6612463\/#:~:text=This%20type%20of%20hearing%20loss,to%20the%20central%20auditory%20circuits.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hearing loss can result from damage to one or more of these parts of the cochlea<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With HHL, individuals will likely struggle to understand conversations in noisy environments. Many speech-in-sound tests involve a machine playing words or phrases in the patient\u2019s ear accompanied by a noisy environment. The patient\u2019s hearing ability will be identified by their capability to understand and repeat the words and phrases at different noise levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Is Hidden Hearing Loss Treated?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Hearing aids are a standard treatment for hidden hearing loss.
