Like most electronics or expensive suede shoes, hearing aids cannot get wet. But what about cleaning them, you may find yourself wondering.

Since hearing aids spend their days in a damp and dirty ear, they have to be cleaned.

You are right – they do! Cleaning your hearing aids is an important part of routine maintenance. But you have to do it carefully.

Your Los Angeles audiologist agrees that cleaning your hearing aid daily is probably the most important thing you can do to prolong the device’s life.

Use a soft, dry cloth to gently wipe all surfaces. We can’t emphasize this enough – do not use water, solvents, cleaning fluids or alcohol to clean your hearing aid.

Instead, opt for a soft, dry cloth and a multi-use tool, which consists of a wire loop, magnet and brush.

You should be able to remove any dust, dirt, debris or earwax from the device with just these two tools. No need for a washing machine.

In addition to not cleaning the device with water, it is important to prevent the hearing aid from getting wet from other activities.

Take the device out before you shower, bathe, swim, take a dip in the hot tub, etc.

Always apply hairspray and facial lotions before you put your hearing aids in for the day.

Even with your best efforts, sometimes things will still go wrong with your hearing aid.

Before driving all the way down to our Los Angeles office, try to resolve the issue at home by following these steps:

If you try all these tips and your hearing aid is still not working, contact our office.

We can either help you troubleshoot the problem at home or will advise you to come in to have your devices repaired.

House Providence Hearing Health CenterRoutine Maintenance Procedures
