<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\nThere is a plethora of research behind the link between smoking and hearing loss. We\u2019ve summarized some of it below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
- A 2019 study<\/a> published in Nicotine & Tobacco <\/em>found that smokers are 60% more likely to develop high-frequency hearing loss than nonsmokers.<\/li>
- A 2014 study<\/a> published in Archives of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery <\/em>uncovered that teens who are exposed to cigarette smoke are two to three times more likely to develop hearing loss compared to those with no exposure.<\/li>
- A 1998 study<\/a> published in JAMA <\/em>found that nonsmokers who live with smokers are twice as likely to develop hearing loss compared to those who were not exposed at all.<\/li>
- The CDC<\/a> reports that exposure to secondhand smoke causes a number of health problems in children, including ear infections, which can lead to conductive hearing loss.<\/li>
- A 2018 review<\/a> of 20 studies found sufficient evidence that smoking is associated with tinnitus (ringing in the ears).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
How Smoking Impacts Hearing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Nicotine and carbon monoxide \u2013 both of which are found in cigarettes \u2013 lower blood oxygen levels and constrict blood vessels. Since the inner ears rely on a healthy supply of oxygen from the blood in order to function, smoking cigarettes can cause damage. Specifically, the damage is to the stereocilia, which are tiny hair cells that convert soundwaves into electrical energy that the brain interprets as sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nicotine and cigarette smoke can also interfere with the neurotransmitters in the auditory nerve, irritate the lining of the middle ear and Eustachian tubes, release free radicals that cause disease and sensitize you to loud noises like a strike at Lucky Strike<\/a>, making you more susceptible to noise-induced hearing loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quitting smoking can\u2019t reverse the damage that\u2019s already been done to your ears, but it can certainly prevent future damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Visit smokefree.gov<\/a> for tips to create a plan to quit, or check out the American Lung Association\u2019s online Freedom from Smoking<\/a> program, which teaches you skills and techniques to help you quit for good. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
