Have you made any New Year’s Resolutions this year? According to one poll, the three most popular resolutions in America for 2026 are to exercise more, save more money and eat healthier. We at The House Institute also recommend that you add a resolution or two regarding your hearing aids. Let’s make 2026 a healthy hearing year, and here are some resolutions you can adopt to make it happen.

Clean Your Hearing Aids Every Day
The number one way to keep your hearing aids working properly and to increase their lifespan is by keeping to a simple cleaning regimen. Earwax buildup is the most common reason for hearing aid malfunctions, and daily cleaning can effectively combat that buildup. Wipe away dirt, moisture and earwax with a soft, dry cloth every night before bed, and use a wax removal tool (such as a wax pick or wax loop) if you notice any earwax that doesn’t come off with the cloth.
Store Your Hearing Aids Properly
Protect your hearing aids by storing them safely in a hard-shell case whenever you’re not wearing them. A case will shield them from moisture and dust, and the hard-shell casing will protect them from physical damage should they be dropped or otherwise potentially damaged.
When your hearing aids are in their case, store the case in a safe location, such as a drawer in your bedroom. Do not store them in a humid place (like the bathroom) or in high temperatures.
Practice Your Listening Skills
Strengthen your residual hearing by listening attentively. Just like any other muscle, your ears and auditory system need regular exercise to stay in good condition. You can practice speech perception and listening comprehension by listening to podcasts and audiobooks, and you can practice active listening skills by participating in social events and group conversations as frequently as possible. Resolve to strengthen your listening skills and see your social life benefit as a result.
Schedule Hearing Aid Tune-Ups
In addition to your daily cleanings, we recommend you see a hearing health specialist twice a year to perform regular hearing aid maintenance and cleanings. Our skilled team can reach the delicate components of your hearing aids that you don’t get during your daily cleanings, as well as diagnose and repair minor issues. Professional maintenance will keep your hearing aids working better and longer. Call today to schedule an appointment.
